Today’s poetry topic idea is the idea of unexpected. Something unexpected can be interesting in poetry.
First, things that are unexpected can range from the mundane to the very significant. A person might unexpectedly find a pen with blue ink instead of one with black ink, or a person might unexpectedly get a call that someone is in the hospital. A poet could focus on one end of the spectrum in a poem, or, could combine both together.
Second, things that are unexpected can range from very bad to very good. Someone might unexpectedly find out that someone is in the hospital, or could unexpectedly find out that someone is having a baby. Again, a poet could focus on either end of the spectrum, or both, in a poem.
Third, unexpected doesn’t have to be a particular event in a poem. A poet could, for example, have an unexpected description, for example, by saying that the clouds were green. Also, a poet could have an unexpected use of form in a poem, for example, by having an unexpected rhyme.
Fourth, a poet could include something unexpected in a poem, for example, by having something out of tone with the poem appear. For example, a poet might write about a sad and difficult scene, and then reveal that it’s a play.
With the ideas above, a poet could use the idea of unexpected in a poem.
